Even today, they do not suffer from the same urban sprawl as the rest of Mexico City. When the capital of Mexico was moved to Mexico City, Coyoacán remained a quiet village, outside the influence of such political and commercial urbanization. He brought with him much wealth and Coyoacán bloomed as one of the most beautiful villages in the world, not just in Mexico. Cortés established himself in Coyoacán with the tribe he had become close with. When Hernán Cortés arrived on their shores of Mexico in 1519, the Tepanec, who hated the native Mexican tribes, were more than happy to assist him in his mission to conquer them. Unfortunately, despite the common language and culture, the tribes were not allies for long and for centuries they fought against one and other to conquer land. There they shared a common language, Nahuatl, with the surrounding villages. This tribe migrated from the Valley of Mexico and settled themselves in Coyoacán. The village of Coyoacán was founded in the 12th century by the Tepanec tribe. The journey takes around 25 minutes depending on traffic. Ubers, as long as you take them outside of peak rush hour, are only about $5 US from the centre of Mexico City. You can also take the Metro, but the station is quite far away from our starting point. The best way to get to Coyaocan, and our first stop on tour, is by Uber.
